Work and Study

Our unique package provides opportunities for language students to study intensive lessons abroad whilst taking on a short-term work experience at one of our varied work placements. Working with our partner language schools across Europe, we provide a package tailored to suit your needs; study, work placement, accommodation, transport, transfers, insurance.

Work and Study packages are available for students studying at A Level or equivalent or higher. It is also suitable for Gap Year students and for university students or adults looking to improve their languages skills, even if it has been some time since they last studied languages formally.

The Work and Study programme runs every Monday to Friday between the end of June and the end of August.   Accommodation is available from Sunday to Saturday. Students can travel for a week, two weeks or longer. We are able to tailor packages to suit your requirements and the time you have available.

Location

There is a friendly welcome waiting for you at the school in Montpellier, which has a lively and international feel. Located right in the heart of the city in the beautiful old town with views of the Arc de Triomphe and the Peyrou Royal Square beyond, it is the perfect place to learn French, discover French culture, meet new friends and enjoy the pleasures of the wonderful South of France!

The school has three premises all within 5/10 minutes walk of each other, which between them offer 20 well equipped, light and comfortable classrooms. In breaks and after lessons you can relax in the lounge area with a hot drink or snack, use the computers with internet access, enjoy the free wifi, discover the resource centre with a selection of French language movies, French literature and workbooks to compliment your studies and browse the tourist information area containing local magazines, newspapers, tourist guides and cultural information.

The Place de la Comédie, the famous main square of Montpellier with its sunny café terraces, is only a five-minute walk away and you will find many bars, cafés, restaurants, shops, cinemas, museums and gardens in easy walking distance which will help you enjoy your stay in France to the full.

The school is located very near bus and tramway stops, which can take you on the short journey to the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean sea.

The school is about 10 minutes on foot from Montpellier's Saint-Roch main train station.

Language Course

The course comprises 20 lessons which concentrate on learning and actively using French. The tuition is very much practice oriented. You will participate in group sessions alongside other students of a similar level, with lessons focused on improving all aspects of the language; speaking listening, reading and writing. There are four, 45 minute lessons per day and these take place during the morning.

You will be given a written assessment before you travel and a speaking assessment on the first morning before lessons in order to place you in the group most suited to your ability level. Classes have an international flavour and a lively feel because they are grouped by ability not nationality or age.

Work Placement

There is no replacement for using your language skills practically in real life situations and in the country where the language is spoken. On a Work and Study trip you will have the opportunity to improve your French language skills in the morning lessons and then be exposed to the language in a practical work situation for the afternoons, giving you the optimum chance to gain confidence in all areas.

Each of our work experience placements fits one of our Business Categories. Placements include shops, restaurants and hotels, nurseries, radio stations, sports facilities - almost anything that you will find in a big city! Our placement team take great pride in securing placements that meet our students' needs. Take a look at our Gallery to see the variety of placements we offer.

Optional Social and Cultural Programme

The school offers a range of activities during the week, such as a games evening, French language workshop, an evening exploring the city, meal out at a local restaurant, films in the school and excursions further afield. These activities change weekly.

Accommodation

For students wanting to completely immerse themselves in the French language and culture we recommend that you stay with one of our carefully selected French host families. They will not only introduce you to the French way of life and help you practise the French language but will also give you a taste of local and delicious regional specialities. The host families are situated near to the school and provide half board accommodation (breakfast & evening meal) from the Sunday before your course starts to the Saturday after it finishes. Subject to availability, an extra day on one side of your trip may be available on request to facilitate flight dates. A surcharge is payable for any extra nights. Included in the price host families in Montpellier also offer return airport transfers from Montpellier Airport.

You can read more about what it means to stay with a host family in our Host Family Guide.

Students of 18 years or older also have the option of staying in one of the school self catering residences with other international students; single rooms are available. Please enquire for availability and prices for residence stay.

Transfers

If you are staying with a host family, return transfers are included in the cost of the package. Your family will meet you on arrival at the train station or airport and drop you at departures on your way home.

If you are not staying with a host family, transfers from the airport can be arranged for a fee on request. Alternatively, we provide directions and all the details you need to use public transport - the efficient and clean Metro runs straight from the airport to the city centre in only 20 minutes!
