Designed to complement the study of French at A-level, our A-level Revision Courses offer intensive small-group and 1:1 teaching to improve students’ skills in using French at an advanced level.
The group classes are tailored to students’ ability levels and cover general aspects of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Studying in groups of mixed nationalities and ages gives students a rich and immersive experience while in France.
Additional 1:1 lessons allow students to specify in advance the syllabus topics they wish to cover. For example, they could focus on a set text, an aspect of speaking or points of grammar.
Please be aware that the A-level Revision Course is not designed around any one single examination board or specification. It is suitable for any student taking A-level, Leaving Certificate, Highers, Finals or similar examinations.
The A-level revision course in Nice is only available in the Easter and Summer holidays. Other French A-level Revision Courses run throughout the year in Montpellier, Paris, Rouen, Lille, Lyon and Bordeaux. Alternatively, we offer an Intensive Language Course all year round in Nice and will be happy to tailor the dates to meet your needs. Learning French at our partner language school located in the beautiful French Riviera is a real treat. Situated in the city but just 10 minutes’ walk from the beach, you get the best of both worlds in Nice: city sights and conveniences coupled with the beauty and relaxation of the Mediterranean Sea. Surrounded by its own garden where you can relax at break times, the modern, well-equipped French language school really is a great place to study.
The language school building has its origins in the late 19th Century and has been beautifully renovated to provide light and airy classrooms, all with air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi. The school has a full computer suite for use outside of lessons, a library, student lounge and a private garden with patio area.
The A-level Revision course is aimed at students in Year 12 or 13 who want to improve their knowledge, understanding and execution of French and develop strategies to prepare for their exams.
The tuition is very much practice oriented. You will participate in group sessions alongside other students of a similar level, with lessons focused on improving all aspects of the language; speaking listening, reading and writing. There are 4 classes of this type per day and these generally take place during the morning though during busy periods these classes can alternatively be placed in the afternoon.
Your remainder lessons are reserved for exam techniques and text analysis. This is also part of the next day’s work to be corrected and analysed by the teacher. A range of text material is used in lessons, all of which deals with French literature and civilisation and there is a mock exam, an oral or written test, at the end of the course on a theme of your choice. We will ask you before you travel if there are any areas in particular that you would like to cover with your tutor.
You are expected to spend 1 to 2 hours per day after lessons on homework and preparation.
You will be given an assessment on the first morning before lessons in order to place you in the group most suited to your ability level. Classes have an international flavour and a lively feel because they are grouped by ability not nationality or age.
Starting with a welcome meeting on your first day, the school offers a range of activities can including: salsa evenings, tapas evenings, karaoke evenings, cheese tasting workshops, cooking workshops, beach volleyball, segway tours, boules and bowling. On Saturdays, full day excursions are offered to local towns such as Antibes, Monaco and Cannes with trips to the Matisse, MAMAC and Chagall art galleries. Activities change weekly and are booked and paid for directly with the school during your stay.
For students wanting to completely immerse themselves in the French language and culture we recommend that you stay with one of the carefully selected French hosts. They will not only introduce you to the French way of life and help you practise the French language but will also give you a taste of local and delicious regional specialities. Host accommodation is situated within 45 minutes total journey time of the school and provides half board (breakfast & evening meal) from the Sunday before your course starts to the Saturday after it finishes. Subject to availability and at a surcharge, an extra day on one side of your trip may be available on request to facilitate flight dates. You can read more about what it means to stay with a host in our Guide to Host Accommodation.
Students of 18 years or older also have the option of staying with a hosts on a self-catering basis. In this instance, students will have access to the kitchen to prepare their own meals.
If you select to stay with a host family, they offer a free pick up service on arrival at Nice Airport. For other transfers, the tram line 2 runs frequent services from Nice airport into the city centre (approx €1.50). We are happy to offer details for travel on public transport on request.
